20170108 – Sunday – South Adelaide, John and Kay Milverton

John and Kay Milverton at South Adelaide meeting this morning.

Today was a wonderful day. I went to the meeting at South Adelaide and sat in my usual seat, 2nd row from the front in the big comfortable seats where I set up my little desk that I keep for my use on Sundays. It means that I can type up notes of the exhortation and have a permanent record of the various exhortations.

Neville and Jenny Rice were at the meeting at South Adelaide this morning and when they came in they were accompanied by two sisters and a brother who they brought down to sit with me. I knew one of the sisters, she was Nita Johns (Milverton) from Adelaide ecclesia but the other two looked familiar but I could not put names to them. Jenny said “This is John and Kay Milverton.” As soon as I heard their name I remembered them from many years ago, maybe in the late 60s early 70s. In the ten minutes or so before the meeting commenced, John gave me a “potted history” of his life up until now. John’s father was Clive Milverton and they originated from Wangaratta in Victoria.

John was 17 in 1967 and remembered all the excitement of the six-day war and how everyone expected Christ’s immediate return. It is 50 years on from that day and we are still expecting Jesus’ imminent return.

John told me about his life since he last saw us which was after he got married to Kay and they passed through Adelaide from WA where they had been living, on their way to live in Qld. They were struggling at that time and a few of us got together to help them out. Although we heard of them now and then through our mutual friends, Don and Una Strempel, I had not seen them gain until this very morning.

Neville Rice was to give the exhortation this morning and after that, Jenny and Neville, John and Kay and Nita would be going to have lunch together before they caught a plane to WA and thence to Esperance where they were going to make their home with their daughter and son-in-law (it may have been son and daughter-in-law, I don’t remember quite). Anyway it was so good to see them and I wish I could have spent more time with them. I got John’s email address and phone number so that in the unlikely event that I ever get to Esperence before I get to Bethsalem, I will know how to contact them and stay with them there. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Neville’s Exhortation was really excellent and I took notes and they are now safely lodged in my eBible for future reference.

After the meeting a group of us went to Charminar’s for lunch (they have a special deal on Sundays and it is very cheap). The group comprised, Ellie and Bruce Trenwith, Andrew Howard, Colleen and Peter Roberts, Chris Burney over from China on holiday, and Greg Stone.

We had a lovely lunch and enjoyed each other’s company. Peter and Colleen said that they still planned to go with me at some time in the near future to “that place you told us about near the Koorong, where you can camp for $12 per night and it is only 20 k from that beach resort you told us about and so you can visit at these resort-style towns without having to pay $45 a night for accommodation.” Well, that was lovely, but for the life of me I could not remember just where it was and Chris Burney wanted to know.

I got out my phone and searched Wiki-camps but could not remember the names of the places. In my minds eye I could “see” it but the names did not come. Eventually together with Chris we scanned all along the coast on Wikicamps via the Koorong and along the coast. At last I found that Beachport was the name I was searching for, and Robe. I still couldn’t remember the actual name of the camping site, but would look for it later.

I hate how my short term memory is not so good these days. I know when I was studying Psychology at Adelaide Uni I learned that the average span for remembering letters in short-term memory was 7.3 secs. and for numbers it was 9.3 secs. The duration of short term memory seems to be between 15 and 30 seconds, according to Atkinson and Shiffrin (1971). Items can be kept in short term memory by repeating them verbally (acoustic encoding), a process known as rehearsal. Well, that may be correct for a “young” memory, but mine is now an “old” memory. Anyway, I know that as I get older, my short term memory does not hold things securely like it used to do. I have to work at everything to do with my memory these days. I have my electronic brain always available so that at one keystroke I can find the “missing” memory that I have mislaid. ANYTHING I need to remember beyond the minute goes into my “Fay’s Brain” file, where I can retrieve it when short-term memory fails me, which is all the time these days.

After lunch, I drove home and tried to watch TV for a while on my computer but there is something wrong with it and I keep getting a “Disk Full” message. If I reboot it will be ok for about 15 minutes and I may be lucky to be able to watch for a while before it gives me the same error message again. I got rid of my TV ages back and have been using the TV on my computer, but my laptop is old and is giving me more and more trouble.

I rang up Tim Colliver and asked him what I should be preparing for as far as a replacement computer is concerned. I would like to change over from Vista to an Apple computer. I will take my computer to Tim for a clean up next time it gives me too much trouble. There is no question, computers take up half my life these days. It was so much easier when we just read a book, and asked Jeff for the answers to more complex questions. These days we need to “google” for information.

Well, It is Monday now, and I have been on the phone to Debbie who is urging me to cut out carbs and sugar altogether, and she tells me that people who have done this have “cured” themselves of Diabetes. Well, I am due to go to my specialist on the 18th January, so I’ve got till then to do some “experimenting.” As of this morning I am putting myself on a “no-carbs” diet and see “what happens.”

This mornings breakfast was two poached eggs, avocado, bacon on a bed of rocket. My sugar reading was 6.7 this morning which is actually very good for me. I normally take 70 units of insulin and 20 units of Novarapid before breakfast but today I haven’t taken any of my insulin at all.  When I get home (I am working away in Cafe 303 by the Sea at the moment) I will check my sugar levels, and if it they are still low, I will not take my Insulin until later.  I will measure myself throughout the day and only take insulin if my sugar is elevated. I know Deb is right, because when I eat things like bread and honey (both no no’s for me) my sugar levels skyrocket. So, we shall see.

Today I am, God Willing, going to start writing Chapter 7 of The Blacksmith’s Daughter Vol 2. I will go home now and read what I wrote in Chapters 1,2,3,4,5 before I start writing Chapter 6. I will use Scrivener for putting all my diaries and data in and assembling it in date order. I am looking forward to it so much because it is ages since I have written anything of my own personal stuff. All last year I spent most of my time on Bible things, and the Xmas break has given me a chance to re-orientate myself to decide what I want to do this year.

I am so looking forward to Trump coming into the Political Heavens this year. It is going to be so exciting to see what God has in mind for the political heavens in the Middle East, the USa and also the Brexit being introduced. What exciting times we live. In.
