20181206 – Thursday – My brother-in-law

This morning Jeff came down to tell me that his brother  (my brother-in-law) was picking him up and they were going for lunch at the West Beach Surf lifesaving club.

From there they were going on a tour around the sights of Adelaide.

I met Robbie when I became Jeff’s girlfriend back in 1959.

Robbie in those days was a member of the Grange Life Saving Club and surfing was only just becoming a popular sport.

I liked the look of it, very much, but I didn’t have a surf board and knew no-one who did.

What Robbie did have was a skim board, and he taught me how to use it.

A skimboard is a round wooden or plastic disk and you throw it along the edge of the shallows and then run after it and jump on board

If you have thrown it “right” it will skim across the edge of the water for quite a long distance with you standing on top.

But as for surfing, it was the wrong time for me. 

I sometimes wished that I had known Robbie BEFORE I knew Jeff, because Robbie was very sporting and so was I, and Jeff was very sedentary.

Robbie ended up going to Sydney to live and there he lived at Avalon and became a member of the Whale Beach life-saving club.

He is a great swimmer and continues his sporting activities to this day.

For years Robbie was “pillow fight” champion which is when two insane guys sit on a slippery pole and belt each other with pillows. 

The one who remains on the pole wins.

It being Xmas time, Robbie is meeting up with all of the Adelaide contingent of the various surfing communities. 

He will be attending number of their Xmas “do’s” and re-visiting his old haunts in and around the beaches of Adelaide.

On Saturday he will be catching up with my youngest daughter and her family, who are very fond of him.
